Get The Best

By Jane Kennelly, Director, Frog Recruitment

“What makes the most difference in your company’s success boils down to how many of your employees are better than your competitors” Wayne Brockbank, Director for the Centre of Strategic HR Leadership.

I attended a TEC (The Executive Connection) seminar last week along with 70 other CEO’s, Managing Directors and business owners. Called ‘Model the Masters for Robust Sales Growth’ we were put through our paces by well-known international US trainer, Jack Daly.

Jack doesn’t hold back. As well as being in raptures over the All Blacks, he has completed 12 Ironmans in eight countries and over 60 marathons and he calls a spade a spade.

Jack is direct. Jack asked us the following question; “How many of you are currently looking to recruit the best sales manager you can find?”

5 people raised their hands.

Jack yelled; “WHY AREN’T YOU LOOKING TO HIRE THE BEST SALES MANAGER POSSIBLE? DON’T YOU WANT TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS?”

Jack was quite right.  Why aren’t NZ Inc businesses continually and relentlessly seeking and securing the brightest, best-of-the-best talent to drive the achievement of exponential growth?

In Jack’s opinion, sports teams are better run than businesses today.  They are continual in their scouting for talent for both current and future needs. They hold a long term view as well as short term.  They analyse all positions, focus on having the best team on the field and keep a strong reserve bench as well.

For Jack, it is all about creating competitive advantage through having the best people.

Jack made sense.  I liked Jack.

Jack’s has a list of must read books. Here are several titles to get you started:

  2. The Challenger Sale by Matthew Dixon
  3. Start With Why by Simon Sinek
  4. Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson
  5. Great By Choice by Jim Collins
