How to Avoid Being Acidic!

PH of the body is an often over-looked area of our health. We understand that PH of soil or swimming pool water is important, yet PH of the body plays a vital role in all body functions. An overly acidic body weakens the immune system and contributes to a plethora of health ailments.

PH stands for potential of hydrogen and is measured on a scale of 0 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline). Human PH is variable. Skin is around 5.5, saliva 6.5 – 7.4 and blood 7.35 – 7.45. Urine PH ranges ideally between 5.8 – 6.8 and is a reasonable indicator of the body’s overall PH (testing kits can be obtained through pharmacies and should be done over a one week period as daily values can fluctuate).

Whilst the body has several systems for buffering and regulating PH, the modern diet and life-style often overwhelms these defences. For example, a can of soft drink has a PH value of 3. As each number on the scale represents a ten-fold difference, the soft drink’s PH is 10,000 times more acidic than the average PH of water (around 7). Add to that the acid forming nature of many of our other favourite foods, stress, exercise, alcohol and other drugs, and we clearly see that it is indeed an important health issue.

Digestive tract problems, poor immune system function and various inflammatory conditions are but some of the common issues caused or exacerbated by overly acidic body PH. Correcting PH imbalances can, however, be a tricky business. Certain ailments like acid reflux for example can result from too little stomach acid so it is unwise to adopt this for that approach such as over consuming antacids. Some general guidelines for alkalizing the body are:

  1. Learn breathing techniques to counteract stress. Adrenal fatigue is inherently acid forming and detrimental to your health. Tai Chi, meditation and yoga are all beneficial.
  2.  Research and include alkalizing foods in your diet. Seemingly acidic foods like lemons donate alkaline forming citrates and ascorbates making lemon and water a good choice.
  3.  Include enzyme rich fermented foods like miso soup which add alkalizing minerals and assist the pancreas.
  4.  Zylanceum cinnamon available from the Trade Aid Shops (refer to my previous blog) is not only alkalizing but helps with blood sugar stability. Several recent studies have also confirmed this (I have converted hundreds of people into using organic cinnamon everyday)

I am off for a few days hunting on the East Cape where I shall gather alkalizing watercress from mountain streams and breathe the wild nature that I so love.

Yours in heath
