Hanging Out On The Edge
By Glenn Bratton, Manager – IT Services, Frog Recruitment
Having recently attended an Icehouse Networking Event where discussions centered on the future of business I came to the conclusion that the future is always with us today. What we need to do is to be stimulated to continually develop what we have now to create the future.
Yet predicting the future of business is a fickle affair. Ask all those pundits pre-GFC where their predictions are now. Mostly down the drain!!
However, one cannot be blinkered either. It’s extremely important to listen to the ‘Futurists’ as they provide the stimulus required to create the future from today’s issues.
Far too cerebral for my own good I know! Try explaining the Big Bang theory in layman terms… it just can’t be done!
One thing that struck a chord with me as a result of this session… is the power of listening and appreciating the people already within your organisation who come up with the wild and wacky ideas that people poo-hoo; the people within the culture that hang out on the edge.
We need to embrace these people, let them know that we understand they are on the edge; recognize them, value them and listen to them. These are the very people who could lead us into a future we didn’t know existed.
It reminded me of a comment Dave Wilde made a few weeks ago in a Frog innovation session I attended: ‘when having a brainstorming session, the very ideas that people laugh at are the ones to pay close attention to, as they have not been done before.’
NASA invites ideas from the general public community to assist with their future – an interesting initiative but one that recognizes that ‘wisdom is in the group’.
Who is on your edge?
